? What if women in Egypt are more economically empowered

Scenario one
In this scenario, traditional measures are taken such as awareness campaigns and flexible work regulations for women:
  1. Women’s participation rate in the private sector increases, where they are hired according to equal opportunities and merit.
  2. Increased women participation in the labor market will positively impact GDP growth.
  3.  Higher share of women in the wage bill will increase family income and improve standards of living.
The Egyptian Center for Economic Studies - ECES

    Scenario two
In this scenario, additional innovative policies are applied such as targeted support to women entrepreneurs:
    1. In addition to private sector involvement, more women become self-employed and entrepreneurs.
    2. Women’s participation rate (currently at 23 percent) becomes closer to that of men (72 percent), potentially increasing GDP by around 30 percent.
    3. In addition to an increased share in wage bill, women’s share in profit generation increases, with positive spillovers such as more innovation and creativity, which would help generate more profit for women.

Cosying up to the Russian bear…and to other titans

It is no secret that the greatest challenge facing Egypt at this point in time is to rebuild its economy which took a harsh bashing in the aftermath of the Arab Spring uprising in January 2011. The year-long presidency of President Sisi which began 8 June 2014 has seen aggressive moves on that front. The launching of the New Suez Canal megaproject in August 2014, new laws and an investment-friendly climate, and the Egypt Economic Conference last March represent significant steps on the path of economic revival. Recent State visits by President Sisi to Russia, Germany, and Hungary have seen valuable trade deals signed with firms in these countries. And last week saw the Tripartite Free Trade Agreement (TFTA) signed between the East African Community, Southern African Development Community and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). After four years of negotiations to establish a framework for tariff preferences and other commitments, the free trade agreement by the three African economic blocs stands as the launch of a potentially game-changing common market spanning the continent, supporters say ... more informatian | wataninet

On with the new Suez Canal

It does not seem so long ago that Egyptians were all so fired up over the prospect of building a new Suez Canal that they managed to come up with EGP64 billion in a mere eight days to finance it. But even more amazing was the fact announced by Hisham Ramez, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), that some EGP27 billion of the total sum raised had come from outside the banking sector, meaning that Egyptians had dug into their personal savings to finance the project. That was less than a year ago, when the CBE issued investment certificates to raise funds for the mega project, and they sold out in a few day

      Up with the economy

As Egypt gears up to the Egypt Economic Development Conference (EEDC) to be held in the coastal resort of Sharm al-Sheikh from 13 – 15 March, Egyptians have been holding high hopes that this conference would work to attract the foreign investment needed to get the economy up from the beating it took in the wake of the Arab Spring uprising in January 2011. Back then Egypt had a pre-Arab Spring growth rate close to an annual 7 per cent and had foreign currency reserves of some USD36 billion. Today, Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) figures place the reserves at USD15.4 billion and, according to Head of the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics Abu-Bakr al-Guindi the growth rate has risen to 2.2 per cent after its all-time low of 0.4 per cent after the Arab Spring in 2011

      Getting smart on bread

I have no idea what anyone in the world would do if he finds a piece of bread lying on the ground but an Egyptian would bend, pick it up, kiss it, say a short prayer and lay it beside the wall lest anyone should step on it. Such is the reverence for bread in the Egyptian culture

Egyptians see bread as a gift from the Divine, the very substance of life; its name in Egyptian Arabic, eish, is literal for life. Bread is the main component of Egyptian diet; no food is eaten without bread and, while bread can do when no other food is attainable, no other food may do in place of bread

?Egypt’s public sector stronghold: Will it hold

So a significant portion—EGP85 billion—of the State subsidy that made the daily life of Egyptians tolerable and their State budget intolerable has been lifted. Prices spiralled almost out of control, and the pain of swallowing the bitter pill of serious economic reform is biting

That much is all-too-obvious in Egypt, but what is not so obvious is what the funds freed into the budget will be used for. It would be agonising for Egyptians should they find out that their sacrifice has been poured down the drain

      ?What unemployment

Is unemployment in Egypt the real demon it has constantly been made to appear throughout the last decades, and which successive Egyptian governments were ? accused of failing to address
“Just give us the ‘young unemployed’, and we’ll
provide the jobs.” This was the reply of Egyptian industrialists and businessmen to a demand by President Sisi that they should provide jobs for Egypt’s young unemployed. The reply was flabbergasting since it challenged a ‘myth’ propagated by official figures that place unemployment at over 13 per cent

      Women as breadwinners

women in Egypt work beside their husbands

How do Egyptian families fare if the adult male members are unable or unwilling to work, or if they are simply not around?

It is customary for Egyptian women to work, and in contrast to many other parts of the world where a woman’s place was traditionally regarded as being in the home—children, church and kitchen—it is considered neither demeaning nor indicative of neglecting her family. According to their background, women in Egypt work beside their husbands in the fields; in private or government offices; or at the highest professional levels. Women have no problem finding work; and when they find themselves having to feed their families they have no qualms about accepting any job on offer. According to the industrialist Louis Bishara, women are more dedicated and committed workers and so employers frequently

      prefer them to men
